The  item upgrade  lets players increase the gear rating of an item by up 700 points and also give it a bonus. Items can be upgraded if they're in your inventory and you bring them to the Kiln.

Generally speaking, the more defense your character has the more value you can get from every point of health you have and it's crucial to upgrade your armor as much as you can.

You can upgrade your armor by visiting one of the Great Fairy Fountains. There are four in total, and each requires you to complete a special side quest that involves the Stable Trotters musical troupe. Once you've done the main side quest and have completed the corresponding fountain and then you can talk to any Great Fairy to open up the menu for upgrading your armor.

The amount of material needed to upgrade each piece of armor will differ. You'll require anything between three Red Chuchu jelly and 10 Rupees to upgrade the first armor piece, and between five Rubies or 10 Fire-Breath Horns to upgrade each subsequent one. The Champion Leathers, as an example can be upgraded to a 5 defense rating, which will allow you to remain competitive in frigid environments with a lot of enemies. The Snowquill Headdress, on the other is able to be upgraded as high as +20 defense so that you can survive a raid with friends.

It's important to note that armor cannot be upgraded the same way as weapons, so you'll need to focus on upgrading it to gain physical power if you're a Warrior or Spell Power in the case of a Mage. To upgrade a potion simply right-click on it in your inventory. Then select "Upgrade" from the menu. However, a re-upgrade can ruin the previous trinket until it is salvaged with the Black Lion Salvage Kit or an alternative salvage tool that is higher-end. Upgrades to trinkets are more expensive than other upgrades, but still less expensive than buying an entirely new trinket.
